Questions and Answers

I've a caravan and want to use my laptop & mobile for internet access on pay as you go not contract. Ideas?

Q) T-Mobile used to do a PAYG access for a £1 a day but I can't find any info on this. This sort of thing is what I'm looking for. Another would be WI-FI hotspots that don't want a subscription (Morecambe area), either free or PAYG. Cheers

can i use a laptop to access the Internet via pay as you go phones?

A) First of all you would have to make sure your mobile phone had a modem in it to connect to the internet and Laptop. Then you would need to find out from your phone company if you can use the facility of a modem on the phone with a 'Pay as you Go' SIM card in it. Then you would need either Bluetooth, Infrared, or a cable connection to connect it to your PC. If you can access the www with your pay as you go phone, you will be able to 'pair' it with your laptop with Bluetooth, then configure your PC to use the modem from your phone which will show up in Network places. If using a cable, then go into Network and search for modem till it shows up and connect to it/configure it.

Does anyone know if Internet powered by Yahoo is available for Pay As You Go customers on three?

Q) Does anyone know if Internet powered by Yahoo is available for Pay As You Go customers on three? I had been using internet with no problem on my Nec 616 before but since three introduced Internet powered by Yahoo, anytime I try to buy internet time by clicking on either 1-hour or 24-hour access, the next screen is " Wait whilst your billing is confirmed..." and this message stays on forever until I just cancel the operation. I spoke with three customer services, they always tell me to reboot my phone (turn it off, remove the battery, put it back on, turn it on and try again) but no change at all. Can anyone please enlighten me on this problem?

A) Isn't there an alternative service you can use ?

Game console internet access?

Q) for example, the new WII console offers free internet access, as long as you have internet access already(think thats right, how i understand it anyway). how does that work?if i have to have internet already, then how does the WII give me free access? am i paying for something, and then getting it again for free? sorry, im new lol

A) It does not give you internet access, you already have it. If you connect it to your PC network it can use your active internet connection just like your PC does. Nothing magic or clever, just simple computing :-)

Why do expensive 4-5 star hotels make you pay for internet access while cheaper motels provide it for free?

Q) I mean come on... I'm paying $250/night at the Ritz Carlton and they make me pay $9.95/day for internet access. At the Homewood Suites down the street they offer it for FREE! What's the deal?

A) The answer really comes down to lack of competition. Smaller hotels and less reputable hotels must use perks to get people to stay there. People go to high end hotels just for the name. They dont need to rely on gimmicks.

Should you have to pay in order to access the internet? Why or why not?

Q) According to this month's issue of Popular Science, big companies like Verizon, AT&T, and Time Warner are lobbying congress to pass legislation that would allow them to charge fees for internet usage. This would limit the # of sites you could view, depending on whether or not you paid for it. Companies would let their customers receive high-bandwidth data at a speedy pace, similar to what exists now, but greatly limit the bandwidth use of nonpaying internet users. So if you don't pay, your internet, even with broadband, would go back to the slow days of dial-up speed. Furthermore, web sites that don't demand fees will load slower, if they do at all. The companies argue that this fee would help pay for the cost required to make high bandwidth data available. Should they be allowed to do it? Why or why not? This would be an additional fee on top of the one you already pay to your ISP

A) You may have some people who try to answer this who either don't know or understand what the C.O.P.E. act is. The phone and cable companies now control more than 95% of all Internet access. These large corporations are spending millions of dollars to promote legislation that would divide the Internet into a two-tiered system. The top tier would be a "Pay-to-Play" high-speed toll-road restricted to only the largest companies that can afford to pay high fees for preferential access to the Net. The bottom tier -- the slow lane -- would be what is left for everyone else. If the fast lane is the information "super-highway," the slow lane will operate more like a dirt road. Today's Internet is an incredible open marketplace for goods, services, information and ideas. We can't give that up. A two lane system will restrict innovation because start-ups and small companies -- the companies that can't afford the high fees -- will be unable to succeed, and we'll lose out on the jobs, creativity and inspiration that come with them. If the COPE act passes, smaller websites like yours and mine could be blocked or made to load so slowly that nobody would bother to visit. That means no more level playing field. It would prevent the opportunity for an individual or small company to create the next eBay (or Yahoo Answers). The COPE Act is real. It’s a huge threat to Internet marketers, bloggers, other website owners and anyone using the Internet. Even Yahoo Answers. Should they be allowed to do it? nope! BTW: The bill was NOT voted down last week. Lobbyists close to the issue say that pressure on Congress's calendar in an election year makes it unlikely that a telecoms bill will make it all the way through the legislative process this year.

Should people who pay for internet access plead poverty on Yahoo?

A) That's a really good point... but I guess you could consider that they may be at a friend's house or a public place.. The other thing is, let's face it: it's hard to live life without it, especially if you are a student or you have kids in school. It's a major setback to not have it, so maybe people in poverty spend money on it that would be spent on some other necessity... and live without something else. I have a friend who is a single mom and needs cash assistance... but she has the internet because she lives in university apartments, and it's all wireless there. It all depends on how you spend and budget your money... someone in poverty who chooses the internet sacrifices something else.

Why do you need to pay for internet access? Can’t you just connect directly to the internet?

A) To connect to internet 1)You should have a IP address (a unique number to identify your comp on Internet network) to connect to Internet... 2)You should be connected to Internet back bone(generally to a Routing Excahnge) Your ISP provides these functions... For more info check this excellent article http://computer.howstuffworks.com/internet-infrastructure.htm You need above two functions to setup your own internet connection. 1)You can register your own IP at your LOCAL IR(generally for a nation there will be one LOCAL IR). You will get a IP assigned to you (I am not sure if they give it to a single person).Even if they give they need a lot of info about you. Generally the ISP get a lot of IPs allocated to them and inturn give one of them to you when you connect to net using your ISP. For more on this http://www.isi.edu/in-notes/rfc2050.txt 2)You need to run a cable from your home to one of the Internet backbone(to a Routing Excahnge) running through your country... Generally, the 1 st point will not cost much to the ISPs. The only costly thing is connecting you to the backbone. For that a ISP buys bandwidth from any TELEPHONE Compnay that owns the network in your country and uses there network to connect you to internet back bone (you can also buy bandwith from a network provider like AT&T. Genrally they sell huge amount of it for large prices. which the ISP buys and inturn sells it to its customers). This is also the reason why they sell internet with download speed/download size (in either cases they are trying to limit the bandwith you use) Thanks, R.Sai

A) I loved the system so a 4 but yes you have to pay for internet access...you have to have highspeed wireless or pay for hotspots (ex at mcdonalds) with a company of your choice...and that's kind of expensive...wireless isn't that bad...you just have to get broadband and a wireless router...that's pretty much it. you can get that for like 15 dollars a month depending on where you live...other than that...the games are good and you can watch movies..have pics...and of course an MP3 player.
